A visit to the bridge??

 Hugh’s son Jamie had challenged his father to pay a visit to the bridge.  Hugh and I just before dinner on the last day put on our smart jackets and made our pitch to the reception. We said we were experienced sailors and had navigated a 42 foot ketch to Alaska and back and also to Hawaii. We got as far as the supervisor of the reception desk who gave us the reply that at this time Oceania does not allow any bridge tours on any of their ships. We said other cruise lines do. The supervisor was aware of that but that was Oceania’s policy. He mentioned Covid precaution was part of that. I said that is out of date policy. Anyhow Hugh can now tell Jamie that he tried. It would have been most interesting to me to view all their navigational aids and how the whole ships systems are managed from the bridge. We tried Jamie!!

Cruising Antarctica on a cruise ship

  We are spending two days and nights cruising part of the Antarctic peninsular. The ship will not be stopping but just cruising at a slow speed at times. The first stop was Elephant Island and then Admiralty Bay where many of the research establishments are located. Initially the temperature was 3C but now down to 1.5C. A couple of times a day there is great commentary by Dr Peter Carey. The weather has been overcast and foggy at times. However we have had great views of humpback whales, penguins, and many birds. The humpback whales are feeding on krill. They are the same species as those in the northern hemisphere although their feeding and breeding areas are only in the southern hemisphere. We are also weaving our way through small icebergs and a lot of brash ice.  There is a difference is seeing everything from the deck of a cruise ship rather than a small boat.
